hes not an activist, hes a salesman going for that "progress dollar".
it doesnt matter that he doesnt get a cent of it (actually though, he should disclose his affiliations properly...) debian does. if people are silly enough to take his advice, thats all the payment he wants (maybe). it doesnt mean he isnt a shill, it just means hes a cheap one. (maybe).
this is advice to someone who wants a SOURCE based distro. of course i agree 100% on suse, i would never use or recommend it, but roy is terribly fond of pairing an obvious truth with complete crap, as if theyre part of the same truth. its an old trick, even one he says exists-- he still uses it all the time.

this is beyond ridiculous. the linux kernel isnt forkable, we have already spent years looking for people to fork it-- let me tell you how that breaks down:
there are people who would fork the kernel, who are using a different kernel instead.
there are people who wouldnt fork the kernel, theyre using it as-is.
there are people who control the kernel, theyre going to continue to do that until it is forked.
roy is talking out his arse, as usual. hes offering a non-solution to people who have already figured out that freedom is somewhere else. linux was never good for gnu, and it isnt now.
he claims that both he and stallman (the latter is a fabrication, an outright lie) understand the problem with systemd, though hes never done a thing about it. he could have tried at least migrating to devuan in the past half decade, but settles for calling himself a "systemd sceptic".
as much as he hates bullshit marketing terms like "edge computing", a "systemd sceptic" is apparently someone who sits with his thumb in his arse for half a decade, too self-important to bother trying a single anti-systemd solution but still wants credit with those working hard to find viable alternatives. most of us have moved on from devuan and antix, he cant even bother with those.
"linux" was never grassroots-- at least NOT in the past 20 fucking years.
linux was never an activist thing-- it was a computer project that corporations were already interested in in the 90s.
THESE ARE for-profit BUSINESSES.

theyre not doing activism-- theyre doing BUSINESS. poor silly roy cant tell the difference. (thats open source for you).
these are the people who have driven kernel development-- people POSING as the underdog, while going ipo.
roy is fooling himself, because thats what open source does. and he wants you to fool yourself too, because thats what open source is.
and open source is NOT about activism. it is about exploiting activism to make BUSINESS cheaper and PROFITS higher.
roy is a salesman. but hes too cheap to ask a commission. (or maybe we could judge that for ourselves, if he properly disclosed his affiliations). thats open source-- none of the activism, and most people dont profit.
if this was about free software, he would look around and see that his COMMUNITY (the people around him) are not interested in debian, because debian BETRAYED communities.
but roy doesnt care about the community, only the people hes trying to impress.
right now, hes trying to impress leah, so hes going to tell someone WAY too advanced to bother with debian to use what he and leah use, although leah (like torvalds) could probably use any distro she wanted, and is using the one that installs and has all the software she needs.
debian has lots of software, theres no question of that.

the reason those things SUCK is that theyre corporate takeover solutions-- like systemd, rust and flatpak.
they move control of computing from the user to the maintainers. thats bad for freedom. its by design, from people who dont benefit from the user being free. they want control, roy is here to sell it for them.

what the fuck does that even mean?
hes read (allegedly) about all the tinkering thats been done so far-- debian would do NOTHING for it, it would add loads of bullshit TO it, debian is far from ideal for any of the purposes of MOST of the people around roy right now.
so why does he recommend it? first of all, hes a debian apologist. facts dont matter-- just like debian, dont worry about facts.
treachery doesnt matter, there are some nice people using debian so if some people destroy it and tell users to suck a bag of dicks-- DONT boycott a distro thats been turned to shit, just ignore them and pretend youre happy.
the sort of "tinkering" debian is good for today, is if you want to constantly clean up after their corporate takeover bullshit.
debian will have you doing LOTS of that.
if you want to CLEAN HOUSE, its not enough to push people "toward communities"-- there wont be communities unless we get AWAY from corporate bullshit.
debian is corporate bullshit. maybe it wasnt always, but it is now.
muckrights is also corporate bullshit. maybe it borrows a lot of slogans and memes from people who are actually serious about fixing this stuff (not just using debian, which continues to throw shit in the way of people trying to have control of their computing) but its just a disguise to look like roy gives a shit.
after all this talk of "systemd scepticism" and "grassroots communities", youre just going to be told to use fucking debian.

debian is the new ubuntu. in other words, its alright for a year or two and then you realise that its created by arseholes who are not the least interested in anything they talk about "community", "freedom", etc. like muckrights, they just use those words so you think they give a shit.
devuan is the new debian, it has the same problems. denis roio at least, is alright. a couple of the other guys are alright-- devuan introduced non-free software into the installer, wbich debian was always strict about avoiding, and rightfully so. note this was a CONDITION of the person maintaining the installer to stay on the project-- he said he would leave if they didnt add non-free modem drivers to the installer.
they have at least talked about a libre version. but thats after making debian less free.
roys job is to take steps backwards and label it "progress".
you can always go back to debian, but why the fuck would you? its not even really debian anymore, and thats another thing roy is fucking kidding himself about.
