### list-of-things-wrong-with-muckrights other pages: => why-msm.html why-msm *originally posted:* apr 2021 *updated:* may 2021 this is a quick overview of things wrong with muckrights. certainly these are things wrong with many tech websites. the difference is that im a former contributor, and muckrights has a reputation (among some people) of not doing these things. most of these are documented in detail elsewhere on this website, or on ewwfs: => https://wrongwithfreesw.neocities.org/rons-ongoing-bs.html ### it lies to its audience * every time muckrights lies about someone, it lies to everyone in the audience. this is hardly indicative of respect for that audience. ### it lies to contributors * a lot of the lies muckrights tells to one-time contributors will never bother them. as part of a pattern, its easier to appreciate how fucked up it is. ### it lies to its own staff or founder * at least one conversation with trsec is either dishonest, or staged. the part where trsec is the founder is a guess. ### it gaslights people in irc * not everything youre being told by the owner is on the level. ### it maintains a monopoly over narratives through dishonest tactics and double standards * i call this the scooby-doo maneuver. ### it downplays and sits on important stories * muckrights has moved in the direction of keeping people deliberately misinformed, while insisting they dont censor. ### it specifically gives free passes to debian and subtly discourages people from moving to alternatives * ron is THE WORST DEBIAN APOLOGIST-- in the ENTIRE WORLD! people are looking for options that are more free than debian. while many of those options are not really better, muckrights goes easy on debian (even when theyre a very significant part of the coup against stallman) and they leave out details that would make it easier to show debians part in this. note that most muckrights stories are researched, written and published on machines running debian. * i doubt very much that debian actually pays anybody from muckrights. they really should, however-- muckrights acts like stallman comes first when its about as true to say they warp reality to let debian off the hook. * debian still gets criticised, obviously. but the criticism is far more superficial. http://techrights.org/2020/12/03/figosdev-on-debian/ <- a "guest post" which is NOT an example of this ### it peaked in 2013 * muckrights reached the height of its integrity and reporting in 2013, when the fsf and gnu/linux peaked. now it claims to create the waves that it rides. * muckrights does still amplify things from time to time, but since 2013 it has either done less of this, done it more redundantly with more noise, or actually mixed amplification with suppression to suit the self-centred whims of its primary author. there is no accountability for this, and it lies about why it stays away from topics. ### it is sort of being held hostage lately update: proof of the main point here http://techrights.org/irc-archives/irc-log-techbytes-270521.html * there are several ways to refute this on a technicality. this is one story i avoid getting into details on, but i will say that there were "secret meetings" in side-channels in irc to discuss the problem. the meetings were not secret enough to keep them out of the logs. * a lot of gaslighting-- specifically of the owner, by others, is involved. im not certain the owner is fooled though. others in irc have complained, but were gaslighted also. * im familiar with the justifications. i certainly do not agree with all of them, though i dont disagree 100% with the decisions being made around this either. all the same, muckrights brags about independence, when the truth is far from that. and this not only results in censorship of articles, but it results in censorship of the irc channel which is not even on a server (merely a channel) that muckrights has control of. which is to say that server was used to push changes in the administration of things on another server which is in no way connected. this has resulted in irc becoming more lightweight-- in both sheer volume, and purpose. * the owner does not appear to be fighting this. instead, he mostly covers for and justifies it. but i dont believe this entirely explains the downplaying and spin on problems in the free software world for two reasons: 1. those predate the efforts to hold the server hostage. 2. i do not believe the owner actually cares about those issues as much as he says. instead, i think he to some degree he simply enjoys the image of it; so why fight the recent efforts to censor him? they fit right in with his efforts to downplay important stories. ### it fabricates and perpetuates fabrications of rifts that do not even exist between free software advocates * this is why i compare the owner to a horrible old auntie (some aunties are nice, im only comparing him to the horrible ones). * this is part of the smears and gaslighting, but by misrepresenting relationships between people (even when efforts to correct so-called "misunderstandings" are made) it inadvertently promotes falsehoods about people who are not even being smeared. ### it exploits people based on the premise that it cares about certain issues * which it demonstrably does not truly care about. you may well be assisting them under false pretenses. leaving may well not stop the exploitation; youre a mark from the time you start contributing. * of course some people have been happy to hang out in irc for many years. i wouldnt be too quick to assume they care about whether contributors are being exploited, but lets be clear about this-- i dont necessarily assume they are apathetic either. its very possible they have not noticed before. ### its gemini index page is probably broken * i have found it challenging enough to track the latest stories with it, i finally switched back to the light html version (i just checked if it was fixed the day this was written). * yes of course, this takes into account the fact that stories from the past few hours are not included. => https://muckrights-sans-merde.neocities.org
